Carnival: capitals use facial recognition to search for fugitives at parties

Capitals in several Brazilian states are using video monitoring systems with facial monitoring to try to find fugitives from justice during Carnival.

The technology is being adopted in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Belo Horizonte and Salvador.

The tool cross-references the images captured by the cameras with police databases. When a fugitive is identified, field teams are notified to approach them.

In Rio de Janeiro, the system began to be tested during New Year's Eve 2023 and is now being used during Carnival. In addition to technology, the government announced a 5% increase in police personnel assigned to work at parties and parades.

In Recife, the police will use drones equipped with thermal cameras, in addition to cameras attached to security officers' uniforms. According to the Pernambuco Social Defense Secretariat, facial recognition cameras are integrated with the National Arrest Warrant Bank system, which has photographs of people who have outstanding arrest warrants.

According to the ministry, a 46-year-old man was arrested last Saturday morning (10) after being recognized on camera. He was a fugitive from justice.

In the capital of Minas Gerais, the facial recognition system is being used in the testing phase during Carnival and, according to the government of Minas Gerais, the objective is to adopt it as part of the security tools in the state.

In Salvador, the technology has been used since 2019. According to the Public Security Secretariat of Bahia, on Saturday alone the cameras recorded the presence of 2 million people in the three Carnival circuits in the capital of Bahia.

Until the early hours of Sunday, the Bahia police had arrested 14 fugitives who were enjoying the Salvador Carnival. According to the secretariat, these people face charges of homicide, drug trafficking, robbery and child support debt.
