Closing Carnival, six schools crossed the Marquês de Sapucaí sambadrome on Monday (12), the second night of parades by the Rio de Janeiro Special Group.
Porto da Pedra, Beija-Flor, Salgueiro, Grande Rio, Tijuca and Imperatriz had already paraded on Sunday (11). See what the first night of parades in Rio was like.
In the second, the elite samba schools of Rio's Carnival presented a range of plots that ranged from Alcione's life and work to Caju, passing through the story of João Cândido, hero of the Revolta da Chibata.
The people who opened the parades were Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, who came from the west zone of Rio to talk about cashews, a legitimately Brazilian fruit. The school owns the biggest hit of the 2024 Carnival in terms of samba-enredo.
Next up was Portela, which featured the debut of the carnival duo Antônio Gonzaga and André Rodrigues to sing the story “Um defeito de cor”, based on the book of the same name by Ana Maria Gonçalves. The soaring eagle showed on the avenue the connection between Luísa Mahin and her son, the abolitionist lawyer Luiz Gama.
Unidos de Vila Isabel chose to reissue its 1993 plot, “Gbalá — Journey to the Temple of Creation, developed at the time by Oswaldo Jardim. This time, the signature was with Paulo Barros, who had the mission of showing children as the path to the salvation of humanity and the planet.
Estação Primeira de Mangueira paid tribute to one of its most illustrious members and fans: Alcione. With the plot “The Black Voice of Tomorrow”, the green and pink showed the religiosity, musicality and connection between Maranhão and the people of Mangueira.
Paraíso do Tuiuti, whose asset was the return of carnival artist Jack Vasconcelos, took the story of João Cândido, the hero of the Revolta da Chibata, to the avenue.
Closing the parades, the current Carnival runner-up, Unidos do Viradouro, bet on the cult of snake voodoo as an asset to seek its third title. The parade, signed by carnival artist Tarcísio Zanon, told the story of the Vodun priestesses, women chosen and initiated into rites of praise to the sacred serpent.
