The Brazilian Forest Code completed ten years on May 25th. THE CNN Specialist in economics and agribusiness Carmen Perez spoke about the legislation, which combines rural production with environmental conservation.
She describes that, thanks to the Code, Brazil manages to have the exact size of the areas dedicated to environmental preservation on each property. “These data showed something that we did not know: the amount of preserved areas within the farms.”
Perez cites data from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) that show that areas preserved by rural people represent 33% of the national territory. Also according to these data, the Brazilian farmer explores, on average, only 50% of his land.
The specialist points out that there are also many internal problems, from the protection of environmental reserves, areas that need to be reforested and the preservation of springs. “Those who are not aligned with these principles had to reorganize themselves”, she adds.
