In an exclusive interview with the reporter from CNN Leandro Magalhães, sent to Italy, this Monday (1), the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos França, stated that Brazil is “part of the solution” for reducing gas emissions and, consequently, for the climate crisis.
The Brazilian chancellor is part of the Brazilian delegation accompanying President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) in Italy, where the G20 Summit took place over the weekend. Commenting on the commitments made by Brazil at COP26, France stated that Brazil has “serious and concrete ambition” with sustainable development.
“Everyone is very convinced that Brazil has a serious and concrete ambition and that, since 1992, when we launched the concept of sustainable development, we are part of the solution”, he said.
France stated that ambassadors of European nations have already expressed satisfaction with the commitments made by Brazil during COP26.
“I just received a message from Alok Sharma [presidente da COP26]. And they also sent me a tweet from John Kerry [enviado especial dos Estados Unidos para questões climáticas] with whom I spoke in Paris on the sidelines of the OECD meeting. Foreign ambassadors from European nations also sent me messages, very satisfied with the commitments that Brazil has assumed in the carbon area”, said França.
“Now, together with more than 80 countries, we are also going to sponsor the agreement to reduce methane emissions.”
On Monday, the Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, presented Brazil’s goals at COP26, more daring than those initially considered. According to the minister, Brazil should reduce 50% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and neutralize carbon emissions by 2050.
On Twitter, John Kerry celebrated Brazil’s promises at COP26 regarding the climate. The US Special Envoy for Climate Issues wrote that “commemorates Brazil’s new commitments to end illegal deforestation by 2028, achieve a significant 50% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030 and achieve zero emissions by 2050. crucial boost to the global movement to combat the climate crisis. We look forward to working together.”
