The cardinals are gathered at the Vatican to decide the date and details of Pope Francis’ funeral, according to the Vatican.
All those who are part of the Global Cardinal College may come to Rome and participate in the daily meetings of the General Congregation, according to the apostolic constitution “Universi Dominici Gregis”.
As part of millennial process of choosing a new pope, eligible cardinals – high church officials appointed by the Pope – from around the world must meet for the conclave in which Francis’s successor is chosen. There are currently 136 eligible cardinals, but only 120 can participate.
But first, cardinals should decide when the funeral should occur and after that when the conclave can start.
The official mourning period includes nine days known as novels, and the Pope should be buried between the fourth and sixth day after death.
The period between the death of one Pope and the election of another is called “interregnum papal.”
Francisco’s body should be taken to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday (23) to be veiled and allow the public to pay tribute, according to the Vatican.
Then, at the end of the mourning period, a great mass mass mass will be celebrated in the Basilica of St. Peter.
