Car crash in camp in the USA leaves four dead

Four people, aged 4 to 18, died and several others were injured after a car hit a camp in Chatham, the US state Illinois, authorities said.

At about 3:20 pm on Monday (28), police responded to a call after a vehicle crossed the eastern side of the Ynot after school camp, Illinois state police said in a press release. Chatham is approximately 16 kilometers south of Springfield.

The vehicle hit several people outside the building upon entering the eastern part of the building before leaving the west of the structure, the deputy chief of the Chatham Police Department, Scott Tarter, said at a news conference.

Three of the dead were hit outside the building, while someone else was hit inside, the authorities said.

Several people were transferred to local hospitals, including a person who was transported by helicopter, the state police said.

The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was unharmed and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, the state police said. The authorities did not disclose details about the circumstances of the accident or if the driver may be indicted.

Subsequently, Chatham police referred the questions to the state police, who had no more information until the middle of Monday night. THE CNN contacted the extracurricular camp.

The YNOT after School Camp describes as “a safe, fun, active and stimulating summer environment” that offers care after school and summer camp.

Governor JB Pritzker said his government is “closely monitoring” the accident. “My heart is heavy for these families and the unimaginable pain they are experiencing – something no father should have to endure,” he said in a statement.

“If you believe in the power of prayer, please reserve a moment to pray right now through the whole community of Chatham,” Chatham police said on their Facebook page. “A terrible tragedy happened here and affected us all.”

The Glenwood Middle School School in Chatham will offer counseling services on Tuesday (29), said the affiliate of CNN , Wand . Classes in the Ball-Chatham School District will be taught through distance learning during the day, and all extracurricular activities are canceled, a district spokesman told Wand .

Chatham Village president David Kimsey said the school district will be “focused on student welfare,” while “we regret the loss of four children.”

“Words fail in times of tragedy and it is impossible to gather coherent thoughts amid such loss,” Kimsey wrote in a statement.
