Cannes Film Festival gears up for 75th anniversary

The Cannes Film Festival is gearing up for a 75th-anniversary edition, which will see a selection of Hollywood greats, hot newcomers and former Palme d’Or winners, in a glamorous return, even under the shadow of the conflict in Ukraine.

The festival will take place between May 17th and 28th, returning to its traditional calendar after two years of interruptions due to the pandemic. It was canceled in 2020, and last year, moved to July, when it was carried out under strict protocols against Covid-19.

This year, the parties are back, and Hollywood heavyweights include Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun Maverick,” taking the star back to Cannes for the first time in three decades, and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic, with Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. Actor Forest Whitaker will receive the festival’s Honorary Palme d’Or for Lifetime Achievement.

There will also be a strong presence from Asia, despite the absence of China, with films from Park Chan-wook and Hirokazu Kore-eda in contention, and “Round 6” actor Lee Jung-jae debuting his new film “Hunt.”

The festival has banned official Russian delegations from the event, but will feature “Tchaikovsky’s Wife,” by exiled Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov, who has been critical of the war.

Also showing will be “Mariupolis 2”, by Lithuanian director Mantas Kvedaravicius, 45, who was killed in Mariupol, a Ukrainian city bombed by Russian forces, nearly a month ago while working on the film. His fiancee, Hanna Bilobrova, who finished the project, will introduce him.
