Candidiasis in the penis: know the causes, symptoms and treatment

Although candidiasis is often associated with people with vaginas, the fungus Candida albicans It can also affect people with penises, causing discomfort in the genital region.

In these people, the infection is less talked about, but it can cause a series of discomforts and even affect other areas of the body, such as the mouth and skin, in rarer cases.

Understanding how candidiasis manifests itself in people with penises is crucial to identifying the signs early and avoiding complications.

How candidiasis arises

The most affected area is the glans — the head of the penis — where it is called balanitis. When the fungus also affects the foreskin, it is called balanoposthitis.

Although less frequent, the infection can also affect the mouth and skin, being more common in individuals with severe immunodeficiency, as explained by Gabriel Ahouagi, urologist at Hospital São Lucas Copacabana, in Rio de Janeiro.

The proliferation of this fungus occurs due to an imbalance in the microbiological flora, facilitated by factors such as a weakened immune system, inadequate hygiene and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics.

“Although candidiasis is superficial and rarely spreads, it is essential that diagnosis and treatment are carried out quickly to avoid discomfort and possible complications,” highlights Zein Sammour, urologist and member of the Department of Infections, Inflammations and STIs of the Brazilian Society of Urology.

Symptoms of candidiasis in the penis

Symptoms of penile thrush vary, but usually include redness, itching, and irritation of the glans or foreskin. Burning or painful sensations during urination, sexual intercourse, or even bathing are also common.

“Often, white patches, plaques or rashes appear in the affected area, as well as flaking or cracking of the genital skin,” explains Sammour.

In some cases, these people may be asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, which makes early diagnosis difficult.

Differences between candidiasis in the penis and vagina

When candidiasis affects the vagina and vulva, it causes symptoms such as intense itching, thick white discharge, and discomfort. In the penis, the infection tends to concentrate on the glans and foreskin.

“Male infection generally presents less pronounced symptoms and, in many cases, can even be asymptomatic,” points out Ahouagi.

However, in both sexes, candidiasis is associated with the same risk factors, such as diabetes, antibiotic use and compromised immunity.

How to avoid candidiasis

To prevent candidiasis, it is essential to adopt proper hygiene practices. “Keeping the genital area clean and dry, using mild soap, and avoiding tight underwear or underwear made of synthetic materials are important measures,” advises Sammour.

Additionally, condom use can reduce the risk of sexual transmission of the infection, and diabetes control is essential to prevent recurrent infections in diabetic patients.

Treatment of the disease

Treatment for penile thrush depends on the severity of the symptoms. “Proper genital hygiene is essential. Antifungal creams and topical ointments are effective in treating the infection,” explains Sammour.

In more serious situations, where there is systemic involvement, it may be necessary to use oral or even injectable antifungal medications, especially in immunocompromised patients.

“Fortunately, these more serious cases are less common,” concludes the specialist.
