Rogers Group, Canada’s largest telecommunications company, announced late Friday that it has begun to restore its network outage that lasted 19 hours and affected banking, transportation, access to government websites.
Almost every facet of daily life in Canada was affected by this outage, as mobile and landline phones were knocked out and internet access was disrupted. Some citizens were not even able to call 911, police said.
“Our services have started to be restored,” the group said in a statement, after earlier admitting there had been “a disruption to its wired and wireless network”. However, the group pointed out that it does not know when there will be a full restoration of its services.
The website NetBlocks, which tracks internet outages around the world, reported yesterday that one in four users in Canada had no internet access.
Rogers is the largest wireless service provider in Canada, with 11 million mobile customers and three million Internet customers.
The cause of the damage is not known.
Canadians rushed to cafes and public libraries that still had internet access yesterday and gathered outside hotels hoping for a signal. The credit and debit card payment system was down, while banks reported experiencing problems with ATMs.
In fact, the Royal Bank of Canada announced on Twitter that “all financial institutions in the country” have been affected.
Many stores in Toronto had posted “cash only” signs in their windows.
The country’s airports also faced minor problems, including Vancouver International Airport, which announced that travelers could not pay their tickets in parking lots, use ATMs or make purchases at stores.
The outage affected the call center of Air Canada, the country’s largest airline.
Police in several cities, including Ottawa and Toronto, warned that although the 911 emergency number remains operational, Rogers customers may experience connection problems.
