Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, said on Monday (10) that US tariffs on steel and aluminum would be “totally unjustified”, warning that the country’s response will be “clear and calibrated ”.
Canada is the largest source of both materials for the United States, according to the US Department of Commerce-a fact that Champagne highlighted in its statement on Monday.
“Canadian steel and aluminum support key industries in the US, such as defense, shipbuilding, energy and cars,” he said.
Champagne added that Canada would consult their international partners and examine the details of the tariffs.
President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Monday on all steel and aluminum imports for the United States, without exceptions or exemptions. And while the United States get most of its steel from Canada, Brazil and Mexico, the tariffs are largely – though indirectly – directed to China. Read more details here.
