THE Justin Trudeau announced that the Canada will further contribute to Ukraine’s efforts to win the war, thereby doubling its military aid to the country.
“This additional military aid will support the Ukrainians as they continue their courageous fight against President Putin’s illegal invasion, and these new sanctions will put additional pressure on those who support these hostilities,” he said.
In fact, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, thanked the Canadian prime minister for this new funding that exceeds one billion Canadian dollars (729 million euros).
“This proves once again that Ukraine and Canada are true allies who share common values and have the same goals,” he tweeted. “Together we will win!”.
This new funding aims to “help the Ukrainian armed forces defend their country against Russia’s brutal and unjustified invasion.”
The funds will be used to finance military equipment, surveillance and communications, fuel and medical equipment.
Less than two months after the start of the war, Ottawa had already approved a first military aid package of 500 million.
Ottawa also imposed new sanctions on 23 Russian officials. Among them are “police and investigators, prosecutors, judges and prison officials who are involved in gross and systematic human rights violations against Russian opposition leaders.”
