Can examinations indicate that jaguar has devoured the caretaker? Understand

The jaguar that killed caretaker Jorge Ávalo on Monday (21), in Mato Grosso do Sul, was captured by the Environmental Military Police last Thursday (24). Now the animal goes through a series of exams to define if it actually ate the caretaker.

The purpose of the exams is to verify that the homemade genetic material is present in the biological material of the jaguar, as in the feces. If the victim’s material is found in this collection, it will be possible to confirm that the animal has fed with parts of Jorge. The exams are being performed at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (CRAS) in Campo Grande, where the jaguar was taken after the capture.

Authorities explain that the jaguar may not have been responsible for the initial attack, as other animals may have had access to Jorge’s body, which was in an open environment. Other animals may also have fed on the caretaker after the attack.

The homemade remains were found about 280 meters from the ranch, indicating that the body was dragged by the jaguar for more than 50 meters.

In addition to homemade biological material, exams also seek to identify health problems or deficiencies that may have influenced the behavior of the animal, which is below weight and debilitated. In CRAS, the animal’s behavior will also be analyzed.

The researcher of the Graduate Program in Ecology and Conservation of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) Diego Viana, in an interview with CNN He explained that the jaguar attack on humans is rare.

According to the expert, the jaguar attacks humans in risky situations. “The jaguar defending puppies or a prey that it has slaughtered, a wounded jaguar, but especially it is very important to look at human practices that generate risk.”

One of the hypotheses that justify the animal’s attack is the practice known as “Ceva”, which consists of the supply of food to attract wild animals to the site. The practice is considered an environmental crime.

The images of the cameras installed on the farm where Jorge worked were referred to expertise. This material can provide clues about the movement of jaguar in the region and the moments that preceded the attack.
