Calviño will propose Rodrigo Buenaventura as president of the CNMV to replace Albella

The race to succeed Sebastian Albella as head of the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) and Ana MartÃnez Pina as number of already has strong candidates: Rodrigo Buenaventura and Montserrat MartÃnez Parera, respectively. The third vice president of the Government and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calvià ± o, will propose both names to the Council of Ministers to take charge of the regulator of the Spanish markets, as sources from the department have confirmed to EL MUNDO government economic.

Rodrigo Buenaventura is the current general director of markets of the CNMV, while Montserrat MartÃnez Parera is the director of the CaixaBank presidential office and the entity’s director of public affairs, as stated by Europa Press.

The appointments of Rodrigo Buenaventura as the successor of Sebastián Albella and of Montserrat MartÃnez as the successor of Ana MartÃnez Pina will be proposed by Calvià ± o to the Council of Ministers to be held next Tuesday.

Candidates must appear before the economic affairs committee of the Congress of Deputies, to subsequently approve their appointments by royal decree. Until then, Albella and MartÃnez Pina will continue in office, thanks to the modification of the regulations approved this week by the Council of Ministers.

Buenaventura and MartÃnez would assume a four-year term, being able to renew it once.

Trajectory

The candidate proposed to preside over the CNMV has been director general of markets of the supervisory body since 2017. Until that moment, he was director of markets of ESMA (the European CNMV), although Buenaventura had already held management positions at the CNMV, specifically that of director of secondary markets and director of institutional relations between 2005 and 2011.

Graduated in Economics and Business Administration from the Autonomous University of Madrid, between 1993 and 2004 he developed his career in the Analistas Financieros Internacionales (Afi) group, where he was an analyst of the Spanish financial market (1993-1996), responsible for financial consulting ( 1996-2001) and CEO of Public Administration Consultants (2001-2004).

For its part, the candidate to chair the CNMV, Montserrat Martínez Parera, has more than 20 years of professional experience in the financial field and in matters related to banking regulation and supervision, both in the private sector and in the public sector.

With a degree in Economic and Business Sciences from the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona and a Master’s degree in Economics and Finance from the Center for Monetary and Financial Studies (Cemfi), she has directed the CaixaBank presidency office since 2018, a responsibility to which this year the management of public affairs of the entity.

MartÃnez is a member of the banking stakeholder group of the European Banking Authority (EBA, for its acronym in English) and of the executive committee of Barcelona Global. He chairs the CaixaBank regulation committee and the economics committee of the Cotec Foundation.

Between 2012 and 2017 she was chief of staff of the deputy governor of the Bank of Spain, between 2007 and 2011 she was chief of staff in the presidency of the CNMV and, from 2005 to 2007, she was chief of staff of the vice president of that institution. Between 2011 and 2012 he worked in the investor relations team at BBVA, an entity in which he also developed his career between 1999 and 2005 as a senior economist in the research department.
