Because of TikTok, many ordinary people with extraordinary talents have been able to share their skills with the world and have a platform that once would have been impossible. In addition to dances, songs and makeup trends, the apps of short videos has made known artists of immense talent, who show their work and even a part of their creative process.
Such is the case of an English student of Art History, who has gone viral on TikTok for the amazing artistic work that she captures in a very special medium: books.

Maisie Matilda is a 22-year-old girl who makes the most popular and beloved books her canvases to elevate them to a level of beauty that we didn’t think was possible. On her TikTok page, she showcases the artworks she has painted in books that are considered modern classics, such as dunes, Harry Potter and The Lord of the rings. The girl says that she especially enjoys making works based on the latter.
I prefer Tolkien inspired paintings [autor del ‘Señor de los anillos’] because I have always been a landscape painter and Middle Earth is full of amazing and varied landscapes: mountains, rivers, forests and beautiful architectural concepts.

Maisie started sharing her paintings just for fun and never imagined they would have such a reach. In fact, one of her videos has more than eight million views. She is currently in her last year of university, so the time that she can dedicate to this hobby is limited. And boy, these paintings consume his spare time, as he says that completing them can take him from a couple of hours to a few days, depending on how detailed it is.
Upon graduation, she says she hopes to spend more time on this activity, and also wants to continue selling her artwork on her Etsy shop.

Maisie shares her work primarily on Instagram and TikTok, where she focuses on her book painting, but also has some of her paintings. Her predilection for Tolkien is evident, but her work is varied. What she most wants is for people to realize that these kinds of techniques exist and for them to be given the importance they deserve.
My main goal is to revive this type of painting, to return it to popular visual culture. Currently, book edge painting is on the verge of disappearing, according to the Heritage Crafts Association.
