At least ten people were killed and five others injured when a bus hit a landmine in eastern Burkina Faso on Christmas Day, the government said today.
The bus had left the town of Fada Ngouma, which is about 220 kilometers from the capital Ouagadougou, bound for the border town of Kanchari, near Niger.
So far no one has claimed responsibility. The tragedy occurred in an area where government forces are trying to push back insurgents linked to al-Qaeda in North Africa and the Islamic State group.
Islamist rebels control some territory in Burkina Faso. Since 2015 they have raided and besieged several cities in the north and east, killing more than 2,000 people. The displaced amount to nearly 2 million.
