Bulgaria: President Radev consults parliamentary groups

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev today began consultations with the parties represented in parliament, as part of the constitutional process for forming a government.

He spoke successively with representatives of the We Continue the Change party, the center-right GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), and the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) for Bulgaria.

We continue the change

Meeting with the largest parliamentary group of the “We Continue Change” party at the 47th National Assembly, President Radev said that there can be an effective coalition government only if there is mutual respect between the partners. He also said that the time when the prime minister ruled alone is over and the hope that such a rule will return was categorically rejected by the citizens in the elections.

The presidency is open to dialogue and co-operation with a future government within its remit and powers, Radev said.

The president told representatives of the We Continue Change party that citizens must be aware of their priorities and readiness to form an effective governing coalition. They should also present their views on EU enlargement, the defense of the rights of Bulgarian citizens and Bulgarian national identity, history and culture, because society expects consistent positions and professional action from Bulgarian diplomacy.

Kirill Petkov, co-chair of the We Continue Change party, expressed hope that his party would present a draft cabinet composition as soon as possible based on a four-party coalition.

According to Petkov, regardless of whether a party is left-wing, center-right or right-wing, Bulgaria needs highways, safe dams, good incomes and getting Bulgarians back from abroad. He expects coalition partners to send their comments by tomorrow on the coalition document, which was finalized at midnight on Sunday, so that the We Continue Change party can go to the head of state as soon as possible to receive a formation order. government with a ready coalition government structure.

At the end of the consultations with President Radev, Petkov said that the future government is expected to have four vice presidents, not necessarily one per coalition partner, and two new ministries: Innovation and Development and State Enterprise. These two pillars are currently under the Ministry of Economy.
