The Ukrainian refugees, who are staying in seaside hotels, will be relocated by the end of the month, Mariana Toseva, director of the State Refugee Agency, told Bulgarian Radio (BNR) today, adding that 63,000 Ukrainians are currently living in hotels.
According to Toseva, more than half of those 63,000 Ukrainians are not expected to remain in Bulgaria.
Toseva said more than 33,000 sites had been confirmed at municipal facilities to accommodate refugees relocated from seaside hotels. In the municipal facilities, which will house Ukrainian refugees, the amount of 15 leva per day per refugee will be paid.
Toseva said the program to house Ukrainian refugees in Bulgarian hotels receiving state aid for the service had been agreed to end on May 31st. She said that the measure had been announced as temporary and that from June 1 “the phase of completion begins, as these people had time to orient themselves, to say if they are willing to find employment and where.”
Toseva said that the concerns of the Ukrainians who need to be relocated are understandable. He stressed that none of them will be left on the street. Toseva stressed that Ukrainians in Bulgaria are actively looking for work and cited data showing that 70% want to start working immediately, while 17% want to work later, after one to six months. More than 60% of Ukrainians who arrived in Bulgaria after the start of the war have higher education diplomas and 30% vocational education diplomas, he said.
According to Toseva, 2,441 Ukrainians entered Bulgaria on Saturday, but 2,792 left the country. He noted that this is a trend that has been observed for a week and in the context of the number of Ukrainians leaving Bulgaria is greater than the number of arrivals.
As of May 12, a total of 252,826 people had fled to Bulgaria to escape the war in Ukraine. More than 103,000 of them have temporary protection status.
