Few Hollywood actors manage to have such a long and successful career as Bruce Willis, who in addition to becoming a great action star, won the hearts of millions of fans worldwide.
However, the sad reality is that everything eventually comes to an end and today the family of Bruce, who is 67 years old, released a statement revealing that he will be retiring from acting due to health issues.
It was a difficult decision
The statement was signed by Bruce’s daughters, wife and ex-wife and posted on social media by Rumer Willis, one of his daughters. In this they share that Bruce was diagnosed with aphasia and the symptoms of this condition led him to make the difficult decision to retire from the world of movies.
To the amazing people who support Bruce, we want to share that our beloved Bruce has been suffering from some health issues and was recently diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities. As a result of this and after extensive consideration, Bruce has decided to retire from the career that has meant so much to him.
These are very challenging times for our family and we appreciate your continued love, compassion and support. We will navigate this new chapter as a strong family unit and we wanted to include his fans because we know how much Bruce means to you, just as you do to him.
What is aphasia?
Aphasia is a neurological condition that causes people to struggle to communicate, either verbally or in writing. The causes are diverse, it can appear after a stroke, a cranial injury or another traumatic brain injury. Aphasia can also be the result of a tumor or some degenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s disease.
This condition can be temporary and tends to affect older people more often. So far, there is no cure for aphasia, but speech therapy is used to treat the symptoms, as people who have it have to relearn language and communication skills.
a spectacular race
Bruce began acting in 1980, as an extra in a Frank Sinatra film. Eight years later he landed what is undoubtedly one of the most notable roles in his career and the one that catapulted him to fame by becoming John McLane, the lead in Hard to Kill.
There are still three films in post-production stage in which the retired actor will appear and they will be the last ones we will see on the big screen: Vendetta, Fortress: Sniper’s Eye and white-elephant.
No one can deny that his retirement is a very sad loss for the world of entertainment, but the most important thing is that Bruce’s health improves and although his fans will miss seeing him on screen, his decision is completely understandable. We hope that he and his family enjoy the time they will now spend together in these very difficult times.
