Brownsville driver who hit 18 people charged with negligent homicide

Texan man faces eight counts of negligent homicide after driving a group of people in Brownsville USAnear a homeless shelter that hosts immigrants, police said today.

Brownsville Police Chief Felix Socida said the driver, identified as George Alvarez, 34, ran a red light, lost control of his vehicle and hit 18 people. Most of the victims were Venezuelans.

Responding to a reporter’s question, Shosida said that police have not yet ruled out the possibility that it was a deliberate act. Authorities are still awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

The guide attempted to flee the scene after running over pedestrians, but many passers-by intervened and immobilized him. According to the APE, Alvarez also faces 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and has an extensive criminal record. He is being held after a judge set bail at $3.6 million.

A video circulating online shows an SUV speeding up and crashing into people on the sidewalk. A second shows the victims slumped to the ground – some bleeding and thrashing, others completely motionless. Reuters was unable to confirm the authenticity of these footage.
