Brown is the new black. For several seasons, in its many shades, this warm, reassuring and versatile colour, usually associated with daytime looks, accessories and coats, has been conquering the catwalks of luxury brands and red carpets, establishing itself as the most credible alternative – and even preferable – to the timeless black, and becoming the color of choice for stars and fashion experts.
But what are the characteristics that make brown the most chic and versatile color of the moment? We have found at least five and we will explain them to you below.
1. It is elegant, very elegant indeed

Daniele VenturelliAmong the colors we associate with the red carpet there is hardly brown. The first color that comes to mind when we think of elegant evening dressesit’s naturally black, maybe red, white, even pink. But brown? It is perfect for coats, knitwear, accessories… On the red carpet, however, we can’t imagine it or, at least, we wouldn’t have been able to until a few seasons ago.

We spotted several wonderful examples at the last Rome Film Festival – Anna Foglietta in a sensual velvet designed by Luisa Spagnoli, Miriam Galanti in Haberi Haute Couture – and before, wanting to take into consideration only the most recent events, at the Academy Museum Gala, where Uma Turman in Fendi Haute Couture e Kirsten Dunst in Gucci they have dispelled any uncertainty about the elegance and sensuality of a color that we tend to associate with daytime outfits.

And it’s easy to understand why: it’s elegant, it suits everyone (just choose the nuance right for your complexion) and above all it is much less obvious than black.
2. It’s a trend that’s here to stay

Victor VIRGILE/Getty ImagesAutumn color par excellence, associated with foliage, to roasted chestnuts and a lit fireplace, brown surprises us once again by making its appearance on the Spring/Summer 2025 catwalks in some of the most desirable looks of the season.
Proof of the fact that brown is not a temporary or marginal trend is the fashion search engine Tagwalk report a 41% increase of its presence in the collections that were shown on the runway in September Milan Fashion Week.
3. It is easy to match other colors

Jose Perez/Bauer-GriffinAlso Carrie Bradshaw she noticed: brown it is easy to match with other colors and adds a warm note to the look. The protagonist of Sex and the City And And Just Like Thatknown for her brightly colored looks, has never left much room for black and neutral tones in her wardrobe. Yet brown, reassuring, enveloping, refined, made its appearance on the set of the third season of And Just Like That, combined with a dusty and delicate shade of pink, and a brightly colored print. The result? Very sophisticated.
4. Bring out the details

Jeremy Moeller/Getty ImagesIn the field of accessories, brown has always been the most classic alternative to black. Tan, coffee, chocolate, taupein all its variations, brown is available in bags, shoes and belts to wear every day.
Why prefer it to black? When it comes to accessories, the reason is its brightness. Unlike its more austere counterpart, in fact, brown does not hide the details from the eye, on the contrary it enhances them highlighting them. So, when you decide to buy a luxury bag, by opting for its brown variant you can be sure that its refined finishes and its refined details – a symbol of quality and excellence – will be clearly visible, from whatever angle you look at them and in any light, from morning to evening.
5. It looks good on everyone (or rather everyone), if you choose the right shade

Gisela Schober/Getty ImagesChic and timeless, the first choice of many when you don’t know what to wear, black actually doesn’t suit everyone (we explained it to you here), in fact it risks hardening the features, making a light complexion appear too pale and dull. On the contrary brown, in its different shades, gives brightness to every complexion, both to a brunette with amber skin like Zoe Saldana than to a blonde like Bar Refaeli, and even to the actor Paul Mescal whose milky complexion goes well with the Gucci suit in a shade of brown defined by the Maison light earth brown.
