The two brothers, aged 9 and 7, who were lost for 27 days in an area of dense forest in the municipality of Manicoré, in the interior of Amazonas, were discharged this Wednesday (6). They were hospitalized for 20 days at the West Zone Children’s Hospital and Emergency Room (HPSC-ZO), in Manaus.
The boys were found last month in a serious condition of malnutrition, dehydration and skin abrasions.
The children were monitored by a multidisciplinary team throughout the period they remained in the health unit. According to pediatrician Eugênio Tavares, the doctor responsible for monitoring the brothers, the malnutrition situation has been reversed.
The youngest, Glauco Carvalho Ferreira, was admitted with 12 kg and left with 18.7 kg. The older brother, Gleiçon Carvalho Ferreira, weighed 18 kg when he was admitted to the health unit, and this Wednesday he left the hospital weighing 26 kg.
“The diet we make for them is special, different from ours. These are foods that are already semi-processed, not in terms of preservatives, but broken into smaller pieces to facilitate absorption. With that, they were able to regain weight more quickly”, detailed the pediatrician.
The doctor also informed that Glauco presented a picture of renal failure, but he has already recovered; and that the infections have been cured and the skin lesions are in the healing phase.
Follow-up
The children should return to the Palmeira indigenous community, in Manicoré, where they live, next Tuesday (12). After leaving the children’s HPS, the two went with their parents to the Casa de Apoio à Saúde Indígena (Casai), coordinated by the Special Indigenous Health District (DSEI) Manaus, which is linked to the Ministry of Health.
The coordinator of DSEI Manaus, Januário Neto, explains that in the place where they live, the boys are monitored by the medical, nursing and dental team. “They will be followed up normally by this primary care team. On behalf of the Federal Government, I thank you for all the efforts made by the Secretary of State, since the arrival of these children brought by the DSEI team, providing strength so that they could come to Manaus”, he said.
