British minister to speak at Brazilian Congress in defense of democracy

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom, James Cleverly, will deliver a speech to the Brazilian Congress next Wednesday (24th) in defense of democracy in the country.

A note from the British government states that Cleverly’s intention is “to emphasize the UK’s support for Brazilian democracy in the National Congress, which was attacked by demonstrators on January 8”.

In addition to political support, the minister will also sign an agreement between the two countries in the area of combating climate change and will confirm the contribution of 80 million pounds (almost R$ 500 million) to the Amazon Fund.

The day before the visit to Congress, he will be in Manaus, where he will visit projects that receive support from the United Kingdom in the Amazon rainforest.

The minister must also sign a climate partnership on green and inclusive growth in the Amazon region.

The UK is looking to diversify its global alliances and Latin America is one of the London government’s areas of interest – especially Brazil, the region’s main power.

The visit is part of a longer trip by Cleverly, who has already passed through Jamaica and should still go to Chile and Colombia. This is the first time that a British Foreign Minister has visited Brazil since 2018.
