UK Secretary of State for Defense Grant Shapps called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's comments rejecting the prospect of creating a Palestinian state “disappointing” and reiterating the UK's commitment to a two-pronged solution. States.
Netanyahu sparked controversy during a press conference in Tel Aviv on Thursday (18), in which he opposed the idea.
“In any future agreement… Israel needs security control of all territory west of Jordan. This conflicts with the idea of (Palestinian) sovereignty. What can you do?” he commented.
On Saturday (20), Netanyahu's office said that the prime minister “reiterated his policy” on this issue during a private telephone call with United States President Joe Biden.
Speaking to British broadcaster Sky News this Sunday (21), Shapps highlighted that it was “disappointing to hear this from the Israeli prime minister”.
“There is no other option. The entire world agreed that a two-state solution is the best way forward. The British government absolutely supports this as a solution,” Shapps stressed.
The secretary pointed out that a Palestinian state “needs to be sovereign on the Palestinian side” and also “provide security guarantees on the Israeli side”.
He also commented that “there is no other obvious way out” of the conflict in Gaza.
On Saturday, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said “Biden is right” to call for a two-state solution and described Netanyahu’s comments as “unacceptable”, adding: “Of course the Palestinian people deserve a state”.
