British billionaire’s body recovered from sunken yacht off Sicily, source says

The body of British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was recovered Thursday (22) from the wreckage of a yacht that sank earlier this week in Sicily during a storm, a source close to the rescue operation said.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah remains missing, the source said. The bodies of the other four people who went missing when the boat sank were recovered from the yacht on Wednesday (Aug. 21).

The head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, had informed the CNN on Wednesday (21) that the fifth body was located on the yacht, but that it had not yet been recovered or identified.

The news came after four bodies were found by divers on Wednesday.

A team from CNN saw Italian authorities move four body bags from rescue boats to ambulances at the Sicilian port of Porticello.

Who is Mike Lynch

Lynch, 59, is known as the UK’s Bill Gates and is one of the country’s best-known technology entrepreneurs.

He was acquitted in June by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges related to the $11 billion sale of his software company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

He said at the time he was “elated” to be cleared in the criminal trial in which he denied any wrongdoing and blamed HP for botching the integration of the two companies.

The shipwreck

The British-flagged ship sank on Monday morning (19), killing at least one of the 22 people on board, after its mast, one of the tallest in the world, broke in half during a violent storm.

The 56-meter sailboat has been identified as the “Bayesian” registered in the United Kingdom.

Fifteen people were rescued, with six reported missing and one body recovered on Monday – believed to be that of chef Ricardo Thomas.

Security camera footage showed the moment a tornado sank the 56-meter-long yacht.

As rain poured down on the harbor, grainy video shows the boat being buffeted by the storm, rocking violently from side to side before capsizing.
