Britain: Secretary of State Ben Wallace will not run for Tory leadership

LAST UPDATE: 15:42

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, one of the favorites in the race to succeed Prime Minister Boris Johnson, said today that he has decided not to run for the party leadership.

The 52-year-old Wallace overtook Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in recent months in popularity and became the most popular member of the government among Conservative Party members thanks to his handling of the Ukraine crisis.

“After careful consideration and discussion with colleagues and my family, I have decided not to run for the leadership of the Conservative Party,” Wallace tweeted.

“It was not an easy decision, but my focus is on my current role and keeping this great country safe,” he wrote.

Four Conservative MPs have already formally expressed their desire to succeed Boris Johnson, but it is expected that around 12 more will also stand. Wallace has not revealed who he will support.
