Britain: “Out of contention” from Conservative succession race, Priti Patel

Britain’s former home secretary Priti Patel was today excluded from the race for the leadership of the Conservative party, after the first round of votes among MPs. Six Conservative MPs are running to succeed former prime minister Rishi Sunak, who resigned after his historic defeat on July 4. The second round of voting will take place next week, after which the candidates will be narrowed down to four. On September 29, the party conference will be held and a new vote will follow, to select the final two candidates. The new leader will be elected on November 2 by online voting of party members. Priti Patel was home secretary in Boris Johnson’s government (2019-22), is close to the right wing of the party and expresses a tough stance on immigration.
