More than 25 people were taken to hospitals today after a large amount of chlorine gas spilled into the pool used for the London Olympics.
According to the fire service of the British capital, about 200 people were evacuated from the water sports center of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in east London. These facilities hosted the track and field sports of the Olympic Games a decade ago.
“Due to a chemical reaction, a large amount of chlorine gas was released,” said the fire brigade, which asked the residents of the area to close the doors and windows of their houses until the facilities were ventilated.
The London Heritage Development Company (LLDC), which manages the park, said the surrounding area had been closed.
Twenty-nine people were transported by ambulance to hospitals while another 48 were examined on the spot and given first aid. “Most patients said they had mild respiratory problems,” according to the London Ambulance Service.
