Britain: Foreign Minister Liz Tras takes over post-Brexit negotiations with EU

Foreign Secretary Liz Tras will take over as Britain’s negotiator with the European Union for the Northern Ireland Protocol following the resignation of Brexit Secretary of State David Frost on Saturday night, the Breton office said today.

“Tras will take ministerial responsibility for the UK’s relationship with the European Union with immediate effect … and will lead the ongoing negotiations to resolve the problems arising from the ongoing operation of the Northern Ireland Protocol,” according to Downing Street.

Liz Trace has been tasked with taking over post-Brexit issues, most notably the controversial protocol governing specific customs arrangements in Northern Ireland.

Tras, a former trade minister who took over the foreign ministry in September, is popular on the Conservative Party base. An avid social media user who is considered a possible future leader of the party, Tra supported “Remain” in the 2016 referendum on Britain’s stay in the European Union, but is now a supporter of Brexit.
