THE Boris Johnson was trying today to secure enough support to become Britain’s next prime minister after prominent right-wing figures in the Conservative party aligned themselves with Rishi Sunak, the man once accused of betraying him.
Well-known personalities, who have supported Johnson in the past, they now appeared to side with former finance minister Sunak ahead of a first Conservative MP vote tomorrow.
Secretary of State Steve Baker said today he would vote for Sunak because the country cannot afford a return to the soap opera that unfolded earlier this year, before Johnson was forced to resign amid a series of scandals. “This is not the time for Boris style,” Baker told Sky News.
Sunak, Johnson and Penny Mordant are trying to secure the support of 100 MPs to stand as candidates in the process to nominate the next prime minister and replace Liz Truss, who has been forced to resign after just six weeks in charge of the country.
Johnson was forced to step down as prime minister in July when Shunak resigned, sparking a wider mutiny and a mass resignation of Johnson’s ministers, according to Reuters and the Athens News Agency.
Baker said the country now needs a period of stability after the financial market turmoil caused by Truss, and that means not voting for Johnson again.
“What we cannot do is have him as prime minister in circumstances where he is certain to collapse, taking the whole government down with him,” he said.
“Johnson will be a candidate and has the support of the required number of MPs”¨
Boris Johnson will enter the race to succeed Liz Truss as the country’s prime minister, Northern Ireland minister Chris Heaton-Harris told Sky News today, saying the former leader has enough support from MPs to get him through. of 100 votes.
Asked if Johnson would run, Heaton-Harris said: “Yes, I think so.”
“We do have the numbers… that’s not a problem.”
