The Definitive project there is, but there are also doubts, both certified by the external technical-scientific committee called to approve the plan of the private Eurolink consortium for the bridge over the Strait of Messina. There are 68 critical issues reported and for which the deputy of Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra asked for an account during the question time in the Chamber Angelo Bonelli addressing the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini.
The scientific technical committee was appointed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in September 2023 precisely with the task of evaluating the Eurolink project managed by the public company Stretto di Messina Spa. The government's objective is to open the construction sites by the end of the year, but it is difficult to do so with the attention focused on these 68 recommendationssome of which are of particular importance because the project is not new and many points need to be updated, many tests need to be redone.
The last update of the project is more than 10 years old, dating back to 2011, before the stop wanted by the Monti government. The new project is based on this and was approved by the scientific committee with the aforementioned clarifications for a bill of 13.5 billion euros plus one billion euros for ancillary works.
Engineers, geologists and urban planners have included, in the final project approval report, recommendations for the Eurolink consortium which must draw up the executive project for the start of the construction site. The wind impact assessment must be updated, the test dates back to 2004, and also of the combined action of wind and rail and road traffic loads. Standards and materials have changed, so a new assessment is needed that takes into account the current standards on the requirements for steel works. Given the point where the bridge should be built, the plan for preventing the effects of possible earthquakes must be updated.
The president of the Stretto di Messina company, Pietro Ciucci, confirmed the reliability of the additions to the final project by reporting wind tunnel tests on 11 bridge models in 5 different laboratories among the most important and specialized in the world. According to these tests, stability is guaranteed with gusts of up to 275 kilometers per hour, more than double the maximum gusts recorded. The seismic framework should instead be updated in the executive project phase.
