European Commissioner Thierry Breton said on Monday he will resign as a member of the EU’s executive body over a rift with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, claiming she asked Paris to withdraw his nomination. Von der Leyen, Reuters reports, is finalizing her list of commissioners for her second term leading the governing body, which is expected to be unveiled to the public this week. Breton, a former business executive, was the EU’s industry and internal market commissioner during her first term, overseeing many of the major policies, from industrial arms production to Big Tech regulation. In his resignation letter, which he posted on X, he said that von der Leyen “a few days ago” asked France to withdraw his name as its choice for the Commission “for personal reasons” in exchange for a “supposed portfolio more influential”.
