Brazilians are taken out of Haiti by helicopter amid the violence crisis

The Brazilian government removed from Haiti, this Wednesday (10), seven Brazilians and a German woman who were in the country. The Caribbean country is facing a serious crisis of violence, with the streets of the capital dominated by gangs, which caused the closure of the international airport and ports more than a month ago.

The Brazilians were taken in two helicopters to the border municipality of Jimaní, in the Dominican Republic, a neighboring country, which shares Hispaniola Island with Haiti. There, they were received by employees of the Brazilian embassy in Santo Domingo, according to Itamaraty.

“In the rescue operation, at the request and at the expense of the German government, an elderly German citizen was included, for humanitarian reasons”, says a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “The Brazilian government thanks the governments of Haiti and the Dominican Republic for the support received, which greatly contributed to the success of the operation,” says the statement.

Another 59 Brazilians identified by the embassy in Port-au-Prince decided to remain in the country or chose to leave the country by their own means, according to Itamaraty.

In the group, which asked to be removed from the country, there are religious volunteers and missionaries, government sources confirmed to the CNN .
