Brazilian woman who worked for the UN dies in car accident on Roraima road

Daniele Milani, an employee of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a body linked to the UN, died in a car accident on BR-174, in Roraima.

The incident took place near the Boca da Mata indigenous community, around 7pm on Tuesday (12).

The driver of the vehicle, belonging to the organization, when trying to avoid the holes on the highway, lost control of the vehicle and overturned, according to information from the Military Police (PM) of Roraima.

The PM confirmed the death of the Brazilian woman at the scene. Daniele was 39 years old.

Four other members of the UN-linked agency were injured and were taken to the General Hospital of Roraima Rubens de Souza Bento, in Boa Vista.

Caritas Arquidiocesana de São Paulo (CASP), an IOM partner, confirmed that the team was in the region to monitor the situation of immigrants coming from Venezuela. Furthermore, he lamented, on his social networks, Daniele’s death.

The IOM declared an official day of mourning because of the death of its collaborator.

The Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger issued a statement in which it “appreciates the professional’s important contribution to Operation Acolhida, which helps, every day, thousands of Venezuelan immigrants to overcome vulnerability, through social reintegration and reconquest of citizenship.”

The Civil Police will investigate the causes of the accident and requested expert reports.
