According to Reuters news agency, the Mass would be concelebrated by 220 cardinals and 750 bishops and priests near the altar, as well as 4,000 priests in the square.
The cardinal redeered the prayer of the faithful, also called universal prayer.
What happened next marked a change from previous dad funerals. The cardinals uttered a brief prayer in six languages: Italian, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Polish, German and Mandarin.
It was the first time Mandarin was included in a papal funeral.
“For us, gathered here, that, having celebrated the sacred mysteries, we may one day be called by Christ to enter his glorious kingdom,” read Cardinal Agostino Liu Bo.
During his papacy, Francis expressed his desire to visit China, and the Vatican has been trying in recent years to strengthen his relationship with Beijing.
Later, the priests and other celebrants distributed the host, also called Holy Communion – bread and wine, representing the body and blood of Christ – among the cardinals.
After receiving, the host was distributed among the crowd of the faithful, seeking to reach as many people as possible.
