Brazilian Matheus Henrique Silveira Melo, 32 years old, was injured with a knife in the lobby of a hotel located in the central region of Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands. The crime took place last Thursday night (9).
The victim and a group of friends were waiting for an app driver for a ride, when an unknown man injured the Brazilian on the hotel premises. He was hit four times by the attacker’s knife and had punctures in both lungs, in addition to breaking his collarbone.
Matheus is recovering from his injuries in a hospital in the Dutch capital and is not at risk of death. A woman, who was also traveling with him, had abrasions on her leg, as she even jumped from a ladder when fleeing from the criminal.
In a video recorded from the hospital, Matheus says that the attacker was staying at the same hotel as him and his friends. “I was promptly attended to by city paramedics as well as the police. I’m receiving all the support, I’m being well taken care of”, clarified the victim, who is waiting for a response from the medical team about the need for surgery to treat the injuries.
The victim was in a group with eight other people on a trip through several European cities, which would last 20 days. The friends had already visited Brussels, Belgium, and Paris, France. They planned to continue their trip to the German capital, Berlin. The attack postponed the travellers’ plans, who are waiting for their friend to recover.
The suspect is a 28-year-old German, who was arrested shortly afterwards, in the vicinity of the hotel. Security agents needed to use non-lethal weapons and warning shots to contain the criminal. According to the local police, he does not have a fixed residence and also did not know the injured Brazilian.
The hotel confirms that emergency services were used to respond to a serious incident involving a guest on site and communicates, in a note, that it collaborates with the police in the investigations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that, through the Consulate General of Brazil in Amsterdam, it established contact with the country’s police authorities and that it provides assistance to the injured Brazilian.
