The 12th edition of the competition Brazil Wine Challenge from the Brazilian Enology Association (ABE), one of the most important in South America, awarded 11 countries and 34 wineries in Bento Gonçalves, in Rio Grande do Sul. The Brazil was the country with the most medals totaling 240 — it is common for the host country of the event to be the biggest winner due to the number of samples entered.
With 1,037 samples from 14 countries, such as Germany, the United States, and New Zealand, around 30% were among the most important categories of the award. With five countries in the ranking, Germany won first place in the Gran Ouro the most relevant of the award, and Brazil came in second. Check out the list below.
“We had samples with a Gold Medal score that were left out due to the 30% cut, which proves the quality of the wines and sparkling wines evaluated in this edition”, said winemaker Ricardo Morari, president of ABE and of the 12th Brazil Wine Challenge.
Non-traditional Brazilian producing regions are among this year’s highlights. “Of the 240 medals won by Brazil, wineries from ten states were honored. This is a source of pride for a country that has been advancing with new producing regions, showing the world its diversity, quality and discoveries in new terroirs,” he points out.
According to the rules of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), the tasters, divided into nine juries, evaluated 5,400 glasses over the three days of tasting, analyzing the sight, smell and taste of each wine.
This edition of the Brazil Wine Challenge also recorded the greater number of women among the evaluators, totaling 20.
