In an interview with CNN this Saturday (24), the infectologist at Rede D’Or, Raquel Muarrek, said that specialists today have been working with the expectation that Brazil will again have “a higher incidence of cases of Covid-19 in up to two months”, in view of the high transmission of the virus in China.
“We assume that this movement will happen, because we have the end of the year festivities and that is what happened at the beginning of the pandemic, in 2020: China started to present the first cases in December, and Covid-19 arrived here in February and March “, she said.
The assessment is that about 250 million Chinese have been infected since the beginning of December, according to leaked data from the country’s health authorities. If correct, the estimate – that the CNN cannot independently confirm – it would represent about 18% of the country’s 1.4 billion people and would be the largest Covid-19 outbreak to date worldwide.
In Muarrek’s reading, this wave of transmissions has the potential to reach Brazil thanks to the “globalized world”.
“The coming and going, especially during the end of year festivities, is more intense”, he explains.
The infectologist also points out that, although a large part of the Brazilian population is vaccinated with two booster doses, the vaccine applied needs to be updated – what she calls “second generation” – to “improve the immune response and reduce infection in the country” .
“The more cases, the more mutations and more severity, because the virus can bypass the vaccine and have a high incidence again”, he said.
