Canpotex, which exports potash from the two main mining companies in Canada, informed the Minister of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina, that it intends to increase the volume of sales to Brazil beyond the current 4 million tons per year, according to a note released this Tuesday. Friday (15) by the ministry.
The minister is in Canada, aiming to ensure greater supply to Brazil, the largest global importer of fertilizers. The mission takes place amid the war in Ukraine and economic sanctions against important producers, such as Belarus and Russia, major exporters of potash and other inputs to Brazilians.
“We continue talking with several suppliers so that our agro continues to guarantee food security for Brazil and the world”, said the minister, according to a statement from the ministry.
According to the statement, Tereza Cristina also met with the presidents of the companies Brasil Potash, Gensource, Nutrien and Fertilizer Canada, in addition to the deputy minister of Agriculture of Canada, Paul Samson.
At the meetings, the minister spoke about the importance of potassium for food production in Brazil, which imports around 95% of the total consumption of this raw material.
“For Brazil to continue increasing its food supply and contributing to global food security, we will need adequate supplies of this input,” said the minister.
In addition to maintaining and expanding trade in fertilizers, the minister invited companies to study investing in projects in Brazil, which last week launched a national fertilizer plan, with the objective of reducing external dependence from 85% to 45%, by 2050
Currently, Brazil is the fourth global consumer of fertilizers, accounting for about 8% of the total.
