Southern Brazil is at risk of experiencing “extreme” drought after devastating floods hit the region last month. The risk is great for biodiversity reserves such as the Amazon region and the Pantanal according to the country’s environment minister. “After the heavy rains, we will have a drought, possibly in the Amazon and the Pantanal,” Environment and Climate Change Minister Marina Silva said during an official event attended by President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva. The minister recalled that droughts are often accompanied by “terrible forest fires”. He referred to an “extreme drought” already being recorded in the semi-arid Kaachinga region of northeastern Brazil that could spread to the southern part of the country, which was swept in May by devastating floods that killed more than 170 people.
