In an interview with CNN, the technical coordinator of the Climate Observatory, Tasso Azevedo, stated that Brazil is following the opposite path in relation to emitting carbon. The speech comes after the announcement by the Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, at COP26, that the country must neutralize emissions by 2050.
“The problem is that Brazil is on the wrong path right now. Emissions are growing instead of reducing,” said Azevedo. “We’re not on the way to our main theme, which is deforestation not only in the Amazon, but also in the Cerrado.”
Regarding deforestation, the Brazilian government is studying bringing forward to 2027 or 2028 the current goal of eliminating illegal deforestation in the country. Currently, it is proposed that the goal be reached by 2030.
For Azevedo, it is necessary to monitor these proposals so that they are fulfilled, despite stressing that they are feasible. “Now you need to make the actions match what is being said.”
