Brazil has two confirmed cases of Deltacron, says Queiroga

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, said this Tuesday (15) that Brazil has two confirmed cases of the Deltacron variant of the coronavirus, in Amapá and Pará. The mutation is a combination of the Delta and Ômicron variants, and so far it has not been located in the country.

“Everything that happens in the countries we observe. For example, this variant, which would be a combination of Ômicron with Delta, Deltacron, which has more in France and in some other European countries, our genomic surveillance service has already identified two cases in Brazil, one in Amapá and the other in Pará, and we monitor all these cases,” he said.

Asked about the level of concern about the new variant, Queiroga stressed that health measures must remain the same and reinforced the importance of the booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

“This variant is an important variant that requires monitoring. So the variants are classified as importance variants, concern variants. And the health authorities are here for this situation to reassure the Brazilian population. The measures are the same, and if I had to indicate one measure, it is the application of the booster dose”.

The booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine has already been applied to 33.3% of the Brazilian population, with more than 70 million people vaccinated. The booster dose should be given four months after the second or single dose.

Almost 180 million people received the first dose, equivalent to 84.6% of the population, and more than 157 million received the second dose, equivalent to 74% of Brazilians.

According to official data from the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass), Brazil has 29,380,063 confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, with 11,287 new cases identified in the last 24 hours. The moving average is on a downward trend, with 44,371 cases in the last week.

Regarding deaths, since the beginning of the pandemic, 655,249 have been recorded, with 171 new deaths in the last 24 hours. The moving average has been down since March 11, recording 415 in the last week.
