Brazil has D-Day against dengue this Saturday (2): understand action that unites states and municipalities

The “D-Day of Mobilization Against Dengue” takes place this Saturday (2) in all 27 Federation Units. The Federal Government's action unites states and municipalities to mobilize public authorities and society as a whole to prevent the disease and eliminate dengue outbreaks.

The Ministry of Health announced the movement last Tuesday (27), when there had been 195 deaths from dengue in Brazil since the beginning of the year. Today, just four days after the announcement, the country has recorded 258 deaths from dengue and more than one million cases.

Leading the project, Health Minister Nísia Trindade fulfills an agenda in the municipality of Serra, in Espírito Santo. In a statement, the minister stressed the importance of all states being aligned in the fight against the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

“D-Day is fundamental to this unity that we have built here. I think that no state can be left out of this effort. If there is one thing that should unite us in Brazil, and that, in my view, is politics with a capital P, it is to show this unity to the population, that the Federal Government, state governments, city halls can and should work together on this action. We will, in fact, be united against dengue”, said the minister.

What to expect from 'D-Day'

The initiative counts on the active participation of health agents, members of all public institutions, digital influencers, media outlets and local actors to raise awareness among the population about the characteristics of dengue and prevention procedures.

Ethel Maciel, Secretary of Health and Environmental Surveillance at the Ministry of Health, commented on the intention of D-Day, which is to dialogue with citizens, promote visits by agents to homes and carry out a massive awareness campaign.

“We need agents to be the protagonists of this day. The agents are those who go into people’s homes and have a very important link in these territories,” he said.

The secretary also cited studies that associate the peak in cases of the disease with climate change, in particular the increase in temperature in all regions of the country, which facilitates the reproduction of mosquitoes in urban areas.

D-Day in the state of São Paulo

The state of São Paulo, which records more than 300 thousand cases and 23 deaths from dengue, promoted a D-Day of State Mobilization starting on Friday (1). The action, which covered all 645 municipalities in São Paulo, mobilized school employees, health professionals, the state's Civil Defense and even the Army.

In addition to the field actions that took place yesterday, the state government launched the Dengue 100 Doubts portal, which lists the most frequently asked questions about dengue, zika and chikungunya asked in internet search engines. The tool also highlights myths that have been circulating through fake news (false information).

Porto Alegre

Activities to combat dengue in the South and North zones of Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul, will be intensified this Saturday (2) as part of D-Day to combat dengue, a national mobilization announced earlier this week by the Ministry of Health.

With actions already planned by the Municipal Health Department (SMS), community leaders and representatives of other city bodies, accompanied by endemic disease control agents, inspection agents and SMS technicians and professionals, will visit neighborhoods covered by the Northern Coordination of Health, in addition to the Cristal neighborhood region.

Pregnant women on alert

Dengue cases in pregnant women increased by 345.2% in the first six weeks of this year, compared to the same period last year, according to data released this Friday (1st) by the Ministry of Health, which appears in the Prevention Manual , Diagnosis and Treatment of Dengue in Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period.

In 2023, there were 1,157 diagnoses of dengue in pregnant women in the first six weeks, compared to 5,151 this year.

Vaccination in Rio does not advance

Only 18% of children aged 10 and 11 were taken by their guardians to health units in the city of Rio de Janeiro to receive the dengue vaccine. According to a report from the Municipal Health Department, in the first week of vaccination against the disease, only 25,317 doses were administered, which corresponds to less than 20% of the 140,000 doses received on February 22.

Rio de Janeiro vaccinates children and adolescents aged 10 to 11 at this stage, and the Department of Health calls on those responsible to attend health centers with them to protect them against the disease.
