Brazil will end 2022 with less urban solid waste generated in homes.
According to a survey by the Brazilian Association of Public Cleaning and Special Waste Companies, the volume will be 1% lower than that recorded last year.
THE CNN Radio Carlos Silva Filho, who is CEO of Abrelpe, said that the “return to normality in waste generation” calls attention.
This is because, during the pandemic, there was an increase, especially because of social distancing, “since there was a greater presence in homes and greater consumption of online shopping and delivery.”
At the same time, the expert reinforced that “we are still far from achieving progress in raising public awareness.”
According to him, because this “is not a priority issue.”
He draws attention to the fact that the North and Northeast have poor collection, with “20% of the waste generated not even collected.”
“The selective collection index is quite limited in Brazil as a whole, there is no awareness of the population and city halls”, he added.
In Brazil, there are more than 2,500 open-air dumps: “It is the worst form of waste disposal”, which affects the health of over “70 million Brazilians.”
To reverse this situation, Carlos Silva Filho points out that it is necessary to bring in resources to finance infrastructure projects and that the creation of public policies that favor waste management is essential.
