Brazil has 117 municipalities with less than 2,000 inhabitants; see which ones they are and where they are located

Data from the new population estimate by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), released last Thursday (29), reveal that the country has 117 municipalities with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. This is equivalent to approximately 2.1% of the total of 5,568 Brazilian cities.

The total population living in these 117 municipalities reaches 195,746, which represents less than 0.1% of the total number of people living in the country: 212,583,750.

Most cities with less than 2,000 inhabitants are in Rio Grande do Sul: 40. Next are São Paulo (20), Minas Gerais (16) and Tocantins (11). See the full list :

Also according to the IBGE population estimate, approximately 44.3% of the country’s municipalities (2,466) have less than 10,000 inhabitants, while 23.1% (1,288) are inhabited by less than 5,000 people.

Cities with less than 1,000 inhabitants

Among the 117 municipalities with less than 2,000 inhabitants, only three of them have a population of less than 1,000 individuals.

Serra da Saudade (MG), 262 kilometers from Belo Horizonte, is the least populated city in Brazil, with only 854 inhabitants.

The second smallest municipality in Brazil is Anhanguera (GO), which is located about 270 kilometers from Goiânia. According to the IBGE estimate, 921 individuals live there.

Next is Borá (SP), home to 928 people. Until last year, the municipality, located 485 kilometers from the capital of São Paulo, was considered the least populous in the country, but now it occupies third place in the ranking.

Together, these three cities have a population of 2,703 people. To give you an idea, the district of the city of São Paulo with the fewest inhabitants – Marsilac, in the south zone – has 11,400 residents, also according to the IBGE.
