Brazil had at least 51 air accidents this year; 19 people died

Brazil recorded at least 51 air accidents this year, according to data from the Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention System (SIPAER). The occurrences left 19 people dead, 12 crew and nine passengers.

None of these episodes involved flights of the so -called regular commercial aviation, which are those operated by airlines by selling tickets.

The last plane crash on the Sipaer panel in 2025 took place on April 9, when a single -engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Campina Grande (PB). The pilot and a passenger had minor injuries and were rescued.

Considering the 51 occurrences until April 9, Brazil had a plane crash every 46.5 hours in 2025. The number does not cover incidents and serious incidents, which are less severe episodes.

In addition to the 19 fatalities, 11 people had serious injuries and 24 had injuries considered light after the air accidents that occurred this year.

With the help of the Pinpoint platform, a journalism tool developed by Google, the CNN analyzed the 51 preliminary reports on the occurrences of 2025. Data crossing shows that almost half (24) of accidents involved agricultural aircraft.

Regarding the flight phase where the accident occurred, 15 were in takeoff and ten in landing.

Most falls occurred in the state of São Paulo (9). Then are Bahia (6), Mato Grosso (5) and Minas Gerais (5).

AGE OF BACK AIRCRAFT

Sipaer data show that 21 rugged aircraft in 2025 (41.2%) were manufactured before 2000. On the other hand, nine (16.7%) were built after 2019.

The oldest aircraft falling this year was manufactured in 1968. It is precisely the single-engine that fell in Campina Grande earlier this month.

In contrast, two accidents involved aircraft manufactured in 2024.

Comparison with 2024

Between January 1st and April 9, 2024, 58 air accidents were recorded in Brazil, according to Sipaer.

In comparing this year’s data with the same period of 2024, therefore, there was a drop of 12.1%.

Remember some accidents

On January 9, a jet twin -engine exploded after an attempt to land at Ubatuba airport on the north coast of São Paulo. The plane had taken off from the city of Mineiros, in the interior of Goiás and ended up on the beach after exceeding the boundary of the track. The aircraft pilot died. Four passengers were injured and two people on the ground were injured.

Four people were aboard the helicopter, two pilots and two aerotatic operators. None of them were injured.

Otherwise

The Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa), which is linked to the Brazilian Air Force, said that “performs an indispensable statistical survey of all aeronautical occurrences and provides this information on its website, through the Sipaer panel, accessible to the whole society as a way to contribute to the identification and mitigation of risk in aviation”.

The agency informs that “it disseminates within the aeronautical community the lessons learned by issuing its final reports and security recommendations, proposing measures to prevent new accidents with similar characteristics occur.”

“The investigations carried out by Cenipa are not intended to establish guilt or liability, as provided for in current legislation, nor are they willing to prove any probable cause of an accident, but indicate possible contributing factors that allow any technical issues related to aeronautical occurrence,” says the agency.
