The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru said on Tuesday (15) that Brazil decided to grant diplomatic asylum to the wife of the former president of Peru Ollanta Humala.
The Peruvian Chancellery reported that Nadine Heredia entered the Brazilian embassy in Lima to ask for asylum, hours after she and Humala were sentenced to prison for money laundering.
The ministry added that the Peruvian government will provide safe passage and guarantees for the transfer of Heredia and his son. Humala is already in prison sentence.

Earlier on Tuesday, Peruvian courts condemned Heredia and Humala to 15 years in prison for unlawful money from Brazilian companies for their political campaign.
Magistrate Nayko Coronado Salazar announced the sentences, emphasizing the almost unanimous decision and issuing arrest warrants to enforce the penalties.
The Peruvian government said it was “in constant communication on this situation” with the Brazilian government.
Heredia denied the accusations of receiving money from the government of Hugo Chavez, Venezuela, or from Lula, from Brazil, as well as any Brazilian company.
The case is part of a broader corruption scandal involving several Peruvian leaders.
