Brazil and China say they support “all efforts” for a peaceful solution in Ukraine

The governments of Brazil and China published a joint note after the meeting between presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Xi Jinping, this Friday morning (14), at Brasilia time.

Among other points addressed, such as Taiwan’s sovereignty, the text emphasizes that both countries understand that “dialogue and negotiation are the only viable way out of the crisis in Ukraine”.

Furthermore, they stressed that “all efforts leading to a peaceful solution” should be encouraged.

This issue of diplomacy is also of interest to other countries, such as the United States, Ukraine itself and France — President Emmanuel Macron met with Xi Jinping last week.

China is an important ally of Russia, also serving as a relief for the Russian economy, bombarded by sanctions since the beginning of the war.

As much as it does not support militarily or declare public support for the onslaught in Eastern Europe, the Chinese have, for example, abstained in votes that condemn the country in the UN.

Brazil is also required to adopt a more emphatic position of repudiation of war and invasion, sending, for example, ammunition to Ukraine. President Lula, however, stated in an interview with CNN that it would not supply the equipment, as it would then be “entering the war”.

“Brazil positively received the Chinese proposal that offers reflections conducive to the search for a peaceful way out of the crisis. China positively received Brazil’s efforts towards peace”, points out the joint note.

The text also asks that more countries “play a constructive role” in the search for a political solution and informs that Brazil and China will maintain contact on the subject.

Taiwan “inseparable part of China”

An even more controversial topic addressed in the note is Taiwan’s sovereignty. China claims control over the island, even though it has never ruled over it.

The meeting between the presidents even took place days after military exercises around Taiwan.

“The Brazilian side reiterated that it firmly adheres to the one-China principle, and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government representing all of China, while Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory,” says the text.

The meeting between Lula and Xi Jinping takes place a few days after the end of Chinese military exercises around the island of Taiwan.

Beijing launched the drills on Saturday, the day after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen returned from a 10-day visit to Central America and the United States, where she met with Speaker of the US House Kevin McCarthy.
