Brazil advances in birth registrations in registry offices and reaches 99.3% coverage

Brazil achieved 99.3% coverage of birth registrations in registry offices among children up to 5 years old in 2022. A significant increase compared to the 97.3% recorded in the 2010 Census. The data are from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Among children under 1 year old, coverage rose from 93.8% in 2010 to 98.3% in 2022. For children aged 1 year, the proportion increased from 97.1% to 99.2%, while for those aged 2 to 5 years, the rate increased from 98.2% to 99.5%.

The data indicates progress towards the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which seeks to guarantee legal identity for all Brazilians.

Analyzing by color or race, the data shows that whites, blacks, yellows and browns achieved registration percentages equal to or greater than 99.0%.
Among people of color or indigenous race, the percentage was 87.5%, representing an increase of 21.9 percentage points compared to the previous census.

North region

Regionally, the North had the lowest percentage of coverage (97.3%), but also the largest increase between the censuses, of 4.7 percentage points.
The Northeast, with 99.3%, had the second lowest percentage and the second largest increase (2.4 pp). The South and Southeast regions reached 99.6%, while the Central-West registered 99.4%.

Specifically among children under 1 year old, coverage was 94.2% in the North, 97.8% in the Northeast, 99.1% in the Central-West, 99.4% in the Southeast and 99.5% in the South.
In terms of federation units, 24 of the 27 have already reached at least 98% coverage. Roraima (89.3%), Amazonas (96.0%) and Amapá (96.7%) had the lowest percentages.

The number of municipalities with 100% of children up to 5 years old registered in the registry office increased from 624 (11.2%) in 2010 to 1,098 (19.7%) in 2022.
Municipalities with coverage below 95% fell from 441 (7.92%) to 65 (1.17%) in the same period, highlighting consistent progress in the inclusion of children in the civil registry.
