Botswana detects 15 new cases of the Ômicron variant of the new coronavirus

Botswana, Southern Africa, has detected 15 new cases of Covid-19 caused by the Ômicron variant. The information comes from the country’s Health Minister, Edwin Dikoloti, who stated, this Sunday (28), that the cases are added to the four confirmed cases disclosed on Friday (26).

The minister applauded his scientists for having early detected the new variant in the country, but he stressed that it did not appear in Botswana because the four initial cases were of people who traveled to the country on a diplomatic mission.

He declined to comment on the nationalities of the four people, noting that the country “wouldn’t like to increase the apparent trend where the variant is stigmatized.”

Since the emergence of the new variant, conflicting information has circulated about the place of origin of the lineage. In an official statement, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the strain was reported to the institution for the first time by South Africa, on November 24th.
