Body trapped in floating anti-immigrant fence at Mexico-US border

A lifeless body was found trapped in the floating anti-immigrant fence installed by Texas state authorities on the Rio Bravo, river that is a natural border with Mexico, the Mexican government announced yesterday Wednesday.

“His principles [σ.σ. πολιτειακού] Texas Department of Homeland Security informed the Mexican Consulate in Eagle Pass that (…) they found a body trapped in the floats, in the southern part” of the floating fence in the Rio Bravo, explained in a press release issued by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Neither the nationality, nor the cause of death, nor any other information was announced.

This floating fence has caused reactions and protests, both in Mexico and in Washington. Installed in July at the behest of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republicanin order to prevent the passage of irregular migrants.

According to local media, many people became entangled in it and had to be rescued.

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, spoke of a “provocation” referring to the specific measure, judging that it violates the national sovereignty of his country.

In the US, the federal Department of Justice has taken the Texas state government to court to force it to remove the floating fence and prevent youth from being launched.

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that it is concerned about the impact of such measures “on human rights and the security of migrants”. He added that he will remain in contact with the American authorities to examine the issue more thoroughly and that he requests “the necessary investigations to be carried out”.
